In this article, you’ll discover the Tokyo that’s actually worth your time.
Food, places, shopping and experiences that stay with you.
Not more. Better.
That’s how this city should be experienced.

I spent nine genuinely happy days in Tokyo.

Not rushing.
Not trying to conquer the city.
Not chasing a checklist.

I walked. I wandered. I chose one or two meaningful places per day — and let the rest unfold naturally.

If you’re visiting Tokyo for the first time, this is my advice:

  • Wear good shoes (15,000+ steps per day is normal)
  • Pick 1–2 anchor spots daily
  • Walk between them
  • Eat when you feel like it
  • Rest without guilt

Tokyo rewards rhythm, not speed.

Below is the exact mix of places that shaped my nine days.
Take what fits your trip length and energy.

Example Smooth Day in Tokyo

If you want a simple rhythm:

Morning: Meiji Shrine
Afternoon: Shibuya Crossing + coffee
Evening: Golden Gai

Or:

Morning: Tsukiji Market
Afternoon: Ginza shopping
Evening: Tokyo Tower

Keep it simple.
Tokyo is better experienced than scheduled.

A Note on Animal Cafés

You will see owl cafés, hedgehog cafés, otter cafés and much more.

I personally cannot recommend supporting places where wild animals are confined for entertainment.

If something feels wrong in your body, trust that instinct.

Pleasure should never come at the expense of another being’s wellbeing.

Common First-Time Mistakes in Tokyo

- Trying to see too much
- Not walking enough
- Forgetting to rest
- Over-planning
- Under-experiencing

Tokyo is not a city to conquer.
It’s a city to move through.

FAQ: Visiting Tokyo for the First Time

Is Tokyo expensive?

It can be — but it doesn’t have to be.
You can eat well at affordable places or spend heavily in high-end districts. Set your rhythm and budget.

Is Tokyo safe?

Yes. Tokyo is one of the safest major cities in the world, I felt it strong here. Still, stay aware like anywhere else.

How many days do you need in Tokyo?

You could spend months here.
For a first visit, 4–6 days allows a good balance.

Is Tokyo walkable?

Very. Expect 15,000–35,000 steps per day.

If You’re Coming to Tokyo for the First Time, Remember This:

Choose one or two anchors per day.

There is more here than you can ever see in one visit.

And that’s the beauty of it.
