A Pleasure Advisor's personal list. Six visits, no filler, just the places I actually keep going back to. I've been to Chania six times. Once I stayed for a full month, off season, just to understand what the city is really like when the crowds are gone. This isn't a tourist brochure. It's a personal list of places I keep coming back to, organized the way I actually think about them: beaches, food, drinks, shopping and where to sleep. All with Google Maps links so you can find them without guessing.

The Old Town
Chania's old town is completely walkable and entirely worth getting lost in. The Venetian architecture, the narrow alleys, the bougainvillea climbing old stone walls. On a normal day here I easily hit 25,000 to 35,000 steps without trying.

Beaches Worth the Trip
Balos — Google Maps
One of those beaches that genuinely looks like the photos. Getting there requires a proper car with good clearance — don't attempt the last stretch of road in a small rental. The easier option is a day boat from the harbour, plenty of operators run trips here. Worth it either way.
Elafonissi Beach — Google Maps
One of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and plenty of people know it. Go early, expect crowds in peak season, and budget a few euros for parking. It earned its reputation.
Kedrodasos Beach — Google Maps
My personal favourite when I want space. A wide, natural stretch with different sections, some quieter than others. You can usually find a corner that feels like it's just yours.
Seitan Limania — Google Maps
A postcard beach tucked between mountains. Takes a bit of a walk to reach it, but I've never arrived without seeing goats somewhere along the way. Worth every step.
Restaurants and Food Worth Eating
Mastrapas — Google Maps
Walk past the entrance and you'll see meat cooking over open fire before you even step inside. That's all the menu you need to understand. Big recommendation.
Kertos Seafood & Fish Restaurant — Google Maps
Excellent caramelised octopus. Right by the water. Good sunset timing if you plan accordingly.
Tamam Restaurant — Google Maps
Great atmosphere and good food. One of those places in the old town that just feels right the moment you walk in.
Pallas — Google Maps
Rooftop terrace right on the harbour. The kind of table you don't want to leave.
AlmyVita — Google Maps
Atmospheric restaurant right on the waterfront. Good food, great setting.
Don Rosario Restaurant — Google Maps
Exceptional pasta and real atmosphere, slightly off the main tourist track. One of my strongest recommendations on this whole list.
Kantouni — Google Maps
A traditional meat restaurant where you can watch the butcher work. Exactly what it sounds like, in the best way.
Tavern Restaurant Hotel Arxontas — Google Maps
I ended up here once during a mountain storm, soaked and slightly stunned. The moussaka was the best I've ever eaten, made by the family matriarch from a recipe that clearly hasn't changed in decades. Also has accommodation if you want to stay in the mountains.
Tavern Spiliaraki, Topolia — Google Maps
A proper mountain taverna. Simple, warm, honest food.
Frosini's Garden — Google Maps
A garden restaurant with horses and a genuinely charming outdoor area. Made for good weather and good company.
Corinna Restaurant — Google Maps
Good food with a sunset view. Arrive before golden hour.
Rogdia — Google Maps
Spectacular views, seriously good food. Go before sunset and stay for the light.
Rizinia — Google Maps
One of my absolute favourites. Affordable, mountain setting, and Maria's cooking is the kind that makes you wonder why you ever eat anywhere else. A Pleasure Advisor top pick.
Periplous Restaurant — Google Maps
A view restaurant popular with locals, which tells you everything you need to know. Elevated perspective over all of Chania.
"Tou Xiri" Traditional Tavern — Google Maps
Small portions done right. Good for grazing and sharing.
Oasis — Google Maps
Reliable gyros. Simple and satisfying.
Blue Horizon — Google Maps
Relaxed beach bar with cold drinks, food and sun loungers. The kind of place you end up staying longer than planned.
Funky's — Google Maps
Every single time I'm in Chania I end up here for pizza slices. Open around the clock. It's become a ritual at this point.
Wine, Olive Oil and Things Worth Bringing Home
Manousakis Winery — Google Maps
Take the tour, stay for lunch. The food is genuinely good and the wines are worth exploring properly.
ABEA Deli Shop — Google Maps
Olive oils, products and everything good that Crete produces. I've pressed olive oil here with a friend who knows food better than almost anyone I know. The shop is a must even if you just browse.
Botanika — Herbs & Spices — Google Maps
An absolute must-visit tea and herb shop. Mountain teas, spices, dried herbs. I always leave with more than I planned.
Red Jane Bakery — Google Maps
The best bakery I've found in Chania. Everything I've tried has been excellent.
Don't Miss
Ancient Olive Tree of Vouves — Google Maps
Over a thousand years old and still producing olives. Worth a detour just to stand next to it and think about what it has witnessed.
Grand Arsenal of Chania — Google Maps
One of the beautifully restored Venetian shipyard buildings right on the harbour. I've stumbled into free opera performances here more than once. Check what's on before you visit.
Chania Saturday Farmers Market — Google Maps
Early morning to midday, every Saturday on Minoos Street. Locals come down from the mountains to sell cheese, honey, olive oil, herbs, mountain teas, fresh vegetables and fruit. Go between 9 and 10 when everyone is set up and the produce is at its freshest. And never leave without stopping for meat skewers off the street grill, wrapped in paper with bread that soaks up everything good.
Where to Stay
Riviera Suites — Google Maps
My personal recommendation for harbour accommodation in Chania. Every room is different, the views are exceptional and the beds are genuinely comfortable.
Domes Noruz Chania, Autograph Collection — Google Maps
A hotel with serious history and a sea view that earns its reputation. The sunset from here is the kind you don't forget.
Alexia Beach Hotel — Google Maps
Relaxed, chill rooms. Good option if you want something lower key without sacrificing location.
Vergina Beach Resort — Google Maps
Right next to the beach. As simple as that sometimes needs to be.
Elia Sea Suites — Google Maps
Good hotel with beautiful views worth knowing about.
A Note on Getting Around
Chania's old town is completely walkable. For anywhere beyond the city, rent a car. The mountain roads and serpentine routes are part of the experience, not just a way to get somewhere. Every time I've rented a car here I've found something new.
One thing I've noticed: ask a local for directions and you somehow always end up talking about food. Everyone here is a bit of a food obsessive. I love that about this place.
